Education at Coastal Villages

Foundation Doctor (F2)

Dr Duncan Edwards

MB BS

Coastal Villages was in the first wave of practices to take F2 doctors in 2006 starting with Dr Davinia Pearson. One of the goals of the Foundation Programme is to foster a better understanding of the broad practice of medical care and, in particular, to provide doctors with a better insight into the relationship between GP and hospital based care. As part of the programme three doctors each year spend 4 months at Coastal Villages as part of a training programme at the James Paget Hospital. We are hoping to expand F2 training at Coastal and take doctors from the Norfolk and Norwich based training programmes from August 2007

GP Registrars

currently none in post

Coastal Villages was accredited as an Associate Training Practice in 2006. Dr S Taylor is an Associate Trainer, in partnership with Dr Liam Stevens of Newtown Surgery as the supervising Trainer. GP Registrars are doctors within a Vocational Training Scheme (VTS) undergoing specialist training in General Practice. The Broadland GP VTS Scheme (Website) based at the James Paget and the Norwich GP VTS Scheme (Website) may in the future have Registrars placed with Coastal Villages.

UEA Medical Students

8 Students from Year 4

training in Growth and Development (unit 10) and Conception and Development (Unit 9)

Over 50% of qualified doctors will become GPs. The Medical School at the UEA aims to provide teaching in GP throughout each of the 5 year medical course because in primary care students get a much stronger sense of the patient as a person, and how that affects their care and the outcomes of treatment.

We became a teaching practice in 2006; it has traditionally been hard to recruit GPs to stay in the Yarmouth area: we hope that the medical students of 2006 will be working as GPs at Coastal in 2012. The Students have enjoyed their first placement in Autumn 2006 and return in January 2007 for a further 9 weeks. We are very grateful indded to all the patients who have helped with medical student teaching.

Doctors from Coastal Villages also take part in interviewing for Medical School places and are examiners for MBBS finals. Dr R Fleetcroft is a UEA Senior Lecturer. Dr S Taylor is an honorary Senior Lecturer at the UEA. If you are interested in studying medicine the UEA medical school website is here
